    Special Rules Applied

    Discovery Rule
By case law, Wyoming recognizes discovery rule for latent injuries; statute runs from when plaintiff knows or has reason to know of the injury and its cause.

Wyoming generally allows four years to file a personal injury lawsuit (for injury to the person). The period typically starts on the date of the accident or injury. However, the state follows a discovery rule in certain circumstances (the clock starts when the plaintiff discovers or reasonably should discover the injury and its cause, especially for latent injuries). If the injured person is a minor when the cause accrues, the statute is tolled until the person turns 18, after which the person has the full limitations period (but Wyoming law also imposes a cap of typically 5 years beyond majority for bringing suit).

    Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Wyoming statutes of limitations

The shortest deadline in Wyoming is 1 years for defamation (libel/slander) claims, while the longest is 10 years for written contract disputes. Missing these cut-offs—even by a day—can permanently bar recovery.

Note: Wyoming also enforces statutes of repose, which create an absolute bar after a set number of years, regardless of when the injury is discovered. Our calculator flags these where applicable.

About Wyoming Statutes of Limitations Calculator

A statute of limitations sets the maximum time after an event within which legal proceedings may be initiated. In Wyoming, these time limits vary by the type of claim or offense.

Missing a filing deadline can permanently bar your claim, regardless of its merit. This calculator helps you determine the deadline for your specific case, but always consult with a qualified attorney for legal advice.
